Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
