Far-Right Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Built On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily built on promises to address growing violence and radically curb immigration.

Ruling Without a Solid Mandate
Despite his clear electoral triumph, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in parliament, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are combined together.
This legislative reality may challenge his policy goals, such as a vow to slash public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not provided a clear explanation.
"There are several aspects about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not detailed his methods for do them," noted a political science expert.
The analyst continued, "In terms of the economy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies common for the right. However where there is considerably less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue across the campaign."
