Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.
