The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
