The British tennis star earned the most important win of his professional journey by rallying from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had before defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory represents Norrie's initial victory over a current world No 1.

"Huge. So big for me," stated Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to beat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I lost in the first round of qualies here. I just sought to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the biggest success of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and likely the strongest competitor in the sport right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive elite tournament wins, which was the finest stretch of results in the Spanish star's young professional path.

Match Breakdown

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to success at the start as he cruised in the opening set. Yet, Norrie gradually fought his way back into the game by serving with greater precision and engaging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding points. His unceasing consistency and reliability gradually left its mark.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to find his timing on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked especially uncomfortable executing his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the game for much of this season, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 mistakes. Across the net, Norrie offered his opponent very few errors, maintaining his steadiness, physicality and power throughout while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to advance forward and play aggressively.

Career Background

After battling for an extended period due to a serious left forearm injury and struggles with his form, the tennis professional dropped as far down as No 91 this season. Following appearances in the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 after that, this triumph reinforces the experienced player's progress as he attempts to make his way to the top 20 and beyond. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his incredible achievements, is yet to figure out how to produce his best tennis indoors.
