Senate Passes Legislation to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of official records concerning the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a almost unanimous vote in the lower house and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration gave in after months of trying to forestall the joint action involving a case that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have suffered long enough,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Presidential Signature

This legislation next will be sent to the president for his approval. He signaled on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though Trump has for months downplayed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the legislation over the weekend, and stated he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Democrats, along with those affected and their representatives who were present in a public section, applauded after the bill was approved. The sole “no” vote came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he feared the measure would disclose identifying details of people, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
