The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Fan Response

It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
