The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
