The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately after his triumph in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the importance of focusing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
