The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
