While Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Image Captures Lifeguard Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the famous coast as her back yard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many local residents, heard loud noises ringing out across the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Stepping out of her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the slope in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him running in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, while holding that sizeable pack and unshod … He was sprinting at something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many moments of courage in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and medical teams treating many those hurt.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the local area, with the beach facility next to the site of the incident transforming into a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen taking action, including rushing into the ocean to save people needing help.

Following the tragedy, messages of support were shared. An online statement shared appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “kindness will always overcome evil”.

The team of rescuers issued a statement, saying they were “processing what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your kind words and encouragement. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our team,” the group stated. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it helps those involved.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional lifeguards, said that the staff rose to the occasion from the instant the violence began right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show dedication every day in ensuring our iconic coastlines secure for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and process the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much good we have observed in the face of such evil.”
